22/04/2024 - BBP REGISTRY CLARIFIES RULES
The BBP Registry is delighted that the Spring Festival (part of the British Open) is now using the BBP registration service for their events, which now brings all major English & Welsh contests under the BBP banner.
However, in recent days BBP has been contacted by several individuals and bands who wish to clarify some of the Registry Rules – specifically in relation to the quantity of moves allowed in a 12-month period, the duration before which a player can return to their previous band, and even clarification on the exact definition of a “move”.
Therefore, Tim Jones (Registrar) and Helen Williams (Deputy Registrar) have put together the following few bullet points to assist Secretaries and players.
BBP REGISTRY RULES vs CONTEST RULES
There is a clear distinction between the BBP Registry Rules and contesting rules.
BBP Registry Rules
The BBP Registry is an autonomous organisation, not directly affiliated or influenced by any particular brass band competition. Therefore, the BBP Registry Rules (which can be accessed here: http://www.bbpregistry.com/rules.html) are independent of any event, and are a blanket set of Rules that govern player moves and band validation. Brass band competitions use BBP as a professional and independent registration service to preserve the integrity of their competition.
All competing bands in England & Wales are registered with BBP. Bands outside of these countries – including Scotland – are not subject to the BBP Registry Rules.
The BBP Registry can process registration paperwork at any time throughout the year, subject to the paperwork being fully completed and all Registry Rules having being followed correctly.
Contesting Rules
Each brass band contest has their own set of contesting rules, which detail aspects such as entry deadlines, borrowing (if applicable), and the deadline for registering players in time for their event. The registration deadline for a competition is usually either “the Friday one week before” i.e. eight or nine days before the contest, or “the Wednesday before” i.e. three or four days before the contest.
The Contest Management will contact BBP in advance of their event with a list of competing bands, and the player registration deadline. BBP then provides the contest with Player Lists via email when requested. Ultimately, the final decision regarding player eligibility at a contest lies with the contest management, not BBP.
BBP REGISTRY RULES – “MOVE”
A move is when a player registers with a band, having previously been registered with a different band – whether this is via a transfer, cancellation/New Player Registration, or combination of both. Currently there is no set timeframe for when a player is “between” bands.
BBP REGISTRY RULES – “RETURNING TO PREVIOUS BAND”
Rules 18 & 21 of the BBP Rules state that a player cannot return to their previous band less than two months after leaving.
BBP REGISTRY RULES – “12-MONTH PERIOD”
Players can only move twice within a 12-month period. To clarify:
Here’s an example:
Until this year, players/bands weren’t required to consider the above in relation to the Spring Festival/British Open as this contest series used their own registration service. However, as the contest is now using BBP for their official registration service, players/bands will have to consider any ramifications of performing at the Spring Festival and their subsequent dates/moves going forward.

11/10/2021 - SNAILGATE
Well... this is a new one on us! Royal Mail enclosed the letter below with a band's paperwork: please read & have a good chuckle...
There's actually been a delay in registering a new player due to this unfortunate situation. It certainly gives a new meaning to the term "Snail Mail"...

04/01/2021 - ROYAL MAIL PRICE INCREASE
Royal Mail have issued confirmation of their approved price changes for 2020. The Royal Mail changes were effective from Friday 1st January, 2021.
The price of a First Class stamp will rise by 9p to 85p and the price of a Second Class stamp will increase by 1p to 66p. Postage for a large First Class letter will increase by 14p to £1.29. While a large Second Class letter will go up by 8p to 96p.
Royal Mail said it understood how hard it was for many companies in the current economic environment, and so have considered price changes very carefully and have sought to minimise any impact on customers. Royal Mail stated that "increases were needed to ensure the sustainability of the service and that UK stamps still represent good value compared to the rest of Europe".
The increases that will be most relevant for Secretaries of BBP-registered bands are below:
1st Class Stamp - £0.85 (increase of 9p)
2nd Class Stamp - £0.66 (increase of 1p)
Large Letter (up to 500g) - £2.39 (increase of 25p). This is how we usually return full sets of cards

25/03/2018 - ROYAL MAIL PRICE INCREASE
The Royal Mail has announced increases to its postage charges, effective immediately. Please see quote from the Royal Mail's website below:
"Royal Mail understands that many companies and households are finding it hard in the current economic environment. As a result, we have considered any pricing changes very carefully and in doing so have sought to minimise any impact on our customers.
From 25 March, the price of a 1st Class stamp will increase by 3p to 70p and the price of a 2nd Class stamp will increase by 3p to 61p. These changes are necessary to help ensure the sustainability of the Universal Postal Service.
Stamp prices are among the best value in Europe
Royal Mail’s stamp prices are among the best value in Europe when compared to other postal operators. Royal Mail research shows that the European average for 1st Class letters (0-100g) is 99p. The UK 1st Class stamp price comes in at below this price. The European average for 2nd Class letters (0-100g) is 77p The UK 2nd Class stamp price remains below this. The UK also has one of the highest quality of service specifications of any major European country."
These price increases will have a direct bearing on BBP-registered bands, as BBP will charge the band with these new prices unless stamped self-addressed envelopes are enclosed with the band's paperwork.

06/12/2018 - WELSH REGISTRY TO MERGE WITH BBP
From 1st January 2019 the Brass Band Players Registry and the Welsh Brass Band Registry will merge, and the existing registration data for all Welsh bands & players will be merged into the Brass Band Players Registry database. Our computer specialists will commence work on the merger in late November, with the date of activation being 1st January 2019.
The merger will guarantee that there is no ambiguity in relation to Welsh/English cross-Registry transfers. Welsh and English bands will both now come under the "BBP" banner, so players will now be able to transfer between Welsh and English bands without the need for the cancellation/New Player Registration route.
Philip Rogers will be continuing as "BBP Welsh Registrar", and work for the Brass Band Players Registry every Wednesday. The rest of the BBP team will work on the Welsh paperwork in his absence, and the previous Welsh Brass Band Registry contact information will now become redundant (01269 841127 / [email protected]).
BBP Registrar - Tim Jones
BBP Deputy Registrar - Helen Williams
BBP Welsh Registrar - Philip Rogers
English & Welsh bands will be largely unaffected by this merger - the only difference that English bands will encounter will be related to transfers as mentioned above. Regarding Welsh bands, the Brass Band Players Registry will honour your validation date and current active registration cards. However, all future New Player Registrations will be processed on new Welsh "BBP" registration cards. Welsh bands will also be required to adhere to the "BBP Registry Rules" and "BBP Fee Schedule", which are available on our website (www.bbpregistry.com). The Rules & Fee Schedule will remain the same for 2019.
Secretaries of Welsh bands are also invited to complete the "BBP Change of Secretary Form" that is also available on our website, and either email or post this back to us at your earliest opportunity. This will ensure that we hold the most up-to-date and correct information for you on file.
The Brass Band Players Registry office is open weekdays from 09:30-15:30 except for Bank Holidays. Please contact us directly if you have any further questions regarding this merger: either by emailing us on [email protected], or by ringing our offices on 02920 700943 (Option 1).

07/05/2015 - NATIONALS 2015/REGIONALS 2016 (SECTIONS 1-4), TRANSACTION DATES
The below information should give bands a guide with regards to registering players in time for the National Finals 2015 (Sections 1-4).
The latest a player can be signed for a band in time for the National Finals 2015 (Sections 1-4) is:
- New Player Registrations: Friday 11th September 2015
- Transfers: Friday 18th September 2015 (completed transfer paperwork would have to be with us on or before Friday 21st August 2015)

01/04/2014 - UPDATES TO THE BBP REGISTRY
We at the BBP Registry have been listening to feedback from Bands. As such, we have decided on the following courses of action.
Surcharge
There will no longer be a £10.00 surcharge for a New Player Registration that is processed within 4 weeks of that player's registration being cancelled with their previous Band. After an extensive review of this charge, the Registry has decided to eliminate it from its Fee Schedule. As such, from the beginning of the new business financial year (01/04/2014) each New Player Registration will now cost £5.00 - regardless of the date of cancellation of the player's previous registration.
Dates of Birth
After much deliberation regarding players' dates of birth appearing on Band Player Lists, the BBP Registry have decided to delete all dates of birth from the Player Lists. The Registry will still require ALL New Player Registration applications to include the player's date of birth, but this piece of data will solely be used as a cross-referencing technique at the Registry office. As such, any incomplete applications will be returned unprocessed to sender.
If any Band Secretary has any questions regarding any of the information above, please contact the Registry Team by clicking on the "Contact Us" page.
